The twenties were a mixed period of some prosperity undermined by disappointment and growing uncertainty. Unemployment remained high (often around 10%) as hundreds of thousands of veterans returned expecting life to be better and looking for work. Social programs including housing and soldier farm settlement schemes were initiated by governments in a stop-start manner.
